Reid Stone is an experienced investment operations professional
who built AdvisoryQuest (advisoryquest.com) to provide a comprehensive list of solutions to serve the needs of
growing financial advisory firms. He began gathering these solutions over the past few years and
wanted to create a place to keep the list and to share it with others seeking to build efficient advisory
practices.
Reid started his career in the financial services industry nearly twenty years ago selling mutual funds and
insurance. However, he soon found that sales (cold calling) was not for him, particularly in a new city. Deciding
to get his MBA, he worked in retail sales for about a year to save up money to go back to school.
While working toward his MBA, Reid worked at the Minnesota State- Mankato College of Business Advising Center
helping undergraduate students gain admittance to the COB. While working toward his MBA he also completed an
internship, at what was then Piper Jaffray, helping the advisors learn new software the office had recently
installed. During his time at Piper, he additionally implemented an internship program for the office to use when
hiring future interns at the firm.
After receiving his MBA, Reid accepted a position with a financial advisory firm handling multiple duties
including operations, technology, client service, reporting, and trading. While working in this position, he
realized that operations was the area in the industry he enjoyed while also realizing how important this role was
within advisory firms. Overseeing the operations of the firm allowed the advisor to focus solely on bringing in
business and servicing existing clients.
In 1998, he joined Tonkawa, a single-family office, and began building the operations infrastructure; later
managing the investment operations, administration, performance reporting, and audits for the firm. During that
time he managed multiple projects including integrating new custodians, interfacing the portfolio accounting system
with the accounting GL system, and automating the performance reporting. In the last five years at Tonkawa, Reid
managed the growth of the portfolio management system which tripled in terms of transaction volume and securities
tracked.
In 2004, Reid continued his education, receiving a Certificate in Financial Planning from Florida State
University. The classes taken were : Introduction to Financial Planning, Insurance Planning, Investment Planning,
Income Tax Planning, Retirement Planning, and Estate Planning.
Reid is currently working on adding features to the website and blog, searching for a new career opportunity,
and spending time with his family. He would like to continue his career in an operations leadership role
contributing his talents to a successful, growing financial advisory firm.
Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, coaching his kids in their various
youth sports (softball and basketball), exercising, kayaking, and reading.
